Scientists link gene to hair loss

Hair Loss Gene Discovered By US Scientists

Hair loss is known to be a combination of genetics and lifestyle. New developments in gene isolation has led to a discovery of a possible gene linked to hair loss.Although a genetic solution is many years in the works this new development has many people excited about the possibility of eventual hair loss gene therapy to coincide with hair loss therapy.

Researchers from Columbia, Rockefeller and Stanford universities in the US believe that the discovery may in time help those with adult baldness.

The genetic form of hypotrichosis simplex, causes “hair follicle miniaturisation”, says Dr Angela Christiano, professor of dermatology and genetics and development at Columbia. She and colleagues publish their findings this morning in the journal Nature. The gene thought to be the cause of this is called the APCDD1, was identified by analysing genetic information from several families from Pakistan and Italy affected by hereditary childhood hair loss.

While this occurs in children affected by hypotrichosis simplex, shrinking follicles are also central to male pattern baldness, says Dr Christiano. In both cases the follicles shrink, causing normal thick hair to be replaced by thin fine hair, also known as “peach fuzz”, the authors write.

Dr Christiano points out that while both conditions deliver a similar result, the gene discovery does not fully explain what lies behind male baldness. Yet, the discovery is important for what it might tell us about the onset of thinning hair.

“The identification of this gene underlying hereditary hypotrichosis simplex has afforded us an opportunity to gain insight into the process of hair follicle miniaturisation, which is most commonly observed in male pattern hair loss or androgenetic alopecia,” Dr Christiano says.

Does wearing a hat cause hair loss?

Can Wearing a Hat Cause Hair Loss?

There is a century old debate on whether wearing hats can cause baldness, and it is possible that this myth is increased by the fact that so many men wear hats on a regular or even habitual basis. A lot of time men  (and sometimes women) are wearing those hats to either cover a bald head. Wearing a hat is not the cause of the hair loss. The myth is thought to start after WWI in which people noticed the young men who had a full head of hair before the war suddenly come back to America and notice less hair on the head of the soldiers. It is just coincidence though.

Trapping Oils in the Scalp

The only time that wearing a hat may be the cause of hair loss is the build up of sebum oil that can occur when wearing a hat.  Doing this can cause a build up of oil on the scalp, which can fill the hair follicles and clog the sebum pores of the scalp and hair follicle shaft, which can sometimes cause the hair follicles to die, which leads to eventual hair loss. Simply washing the hair more often with a quality hair loss shampoo to remove the excess oil can reverse or prevent this type of hair loss. Try to wash the hat occasionally, too.

Genetics, Disease and Stress

Hair loss can be caused by genetics from both the mother’s and father’s side of the family and not by any type of actual hair covering like hats, do-rags or wigs. It can be caused by certain diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and alopecia, a condition that causes hair to fall out in clumps. The hormone DHT can also play an important role in hair loss. Hair loss can be caused by stress which will be discussed in a more in depth and biochemical aspect in a future post.
